Project Type: Healthcare, Hospital Services
Project Value: £750,000
Project Overview: Works package was to install new freezers and cold rooms for the main Hospital. These rooms are for storage of foods and the main prep areas that supply all catering facilities to the entire estate – the QEH is one of the biggest Hospitals in the Country. The works were completed in phases so that the existing facilities could be retained and remain in use whilst new ones were constructed. Works included strip out and demolitions of various areas to house the new cold rooms. It also included significant M&E works associated with new freezer equipment and chillers installed on the Hospital roofs, a long way away from where the Catering Dept is sited. This involved major coordination works and working evenings for 4 months non-stop. The old cold storage areas and freezers were decommissioned and all food swapped over in a short period of time to avoid loss of stock. There were significant builders works involved in creating these new facilities along with enhanced life saving systems and fire stopping throughout the length of the basement within the Hospital. The project was completed on time and on budget without any loss of continuity to the Hospital’s catering services.
